This was the first thing I wrote when my marriage officially ended. Naturally, I was starting to reflect on everything that had happened, and I was thinking about how long I had been with this person - literally half of my life. It was the first time as an artist where I felt like it was important to write really deliberately, with details about the real events. It sort of set the tone for my writing on the rest of the record. I had all this dirty laundry and writing this song was the first step at washing it all. I started listening to these old voicemails on my phone - I was in a purging state, trying to clean up my life in the simple ways that I could. Hearing all these voice mails from people that I never called back made me think… Would I be one of these voicemails to him now? Would he even call me back? When I found the voicemails from my grandmother, it crushed me. This longing feeling of wishing someone would call you back - I realized she had those feelings with me. Those voicemails were from years ago. We were having a strangely parallel experience, and I thought that was an interesting emotion to explore in the song.
lyrics
Would you tell me if you weren’t doing fine
Yeah you know
I still think about you but I can’t read your mind
You laugh a lot, you fall apart
Such a gemini
And we go way back, restart the playback
Take up half my life
I know it’s hard, yet here we are
Got your nine to five
But it’s a bit too late, the train left at eight
Got a lonely drive
And I call you back
And I call you back
And I call you back
Will you call me back
Would you tell me if you weren’t doing fine
Yeah you know
I still think about you but I can’t read your mind
You try your best to clean up the mess
Get it spotless, forget the heartless
I get it, you’ve already said it
And I can fill in the rest
I know it’s not all you got
And if it is, that’s fucking lame
Cause you would have told me, the old you my only
That you were still game
And I call you back
And I call you back
And I call you back
Will you call me back
And I call you back
And I call you back
And I call you back
Will you call me back
Hey it’s Britney
And I wanted to try you just one last time regarding
An online request for getting some financial help
So just go ahead and call me back and I’ll
Hello this is Josue
Uh, I was the guy that rear ended you a couple hours ago
If you could just call me back
I would like to work something out
See if there’s anything I can do
To just, you know, try to I guess keep this off the books
Um, yeah just give me a call back, please
Thank you
Hey Bailey it’s Derek at Sweetwater
Trying again to connect with you
We sent that gear out a while back
The X32 Rack, and the In-Ears, and the X-LIVE
And I know you do stuff with Damon
I’ve been working with Damon for many years
Love to hear more about you
Why are you calling me
Why are you calling me
Why are you calling me
Why are you calling me
Hey Bailey this is Grandma
Just wanted to say hi
I was real surprised to see you the other day but loved it
I wish we could do that more often
Take care, have a good day, bye
Bailey if this is you this is Grandma
(Bailey this is your Grandma)
I just wanted to tell you how much
We enjoyed being with you the other day
(Grandma Drake)
And I hope you have a good week
(I’ve been trying to get ahold of you or Alex or anybody over there)
Thank you, bye
(And I can’t seem to reach you, this is my telephone number
So please give me a call sometime today)

(It’s Grandma Drake)
I’d like to talk with you, thank you
(Thank you, buh-bye)
